Moanalei Villas officially opens, marking a new era for luxury tourism in Samoa

Moanalei Villas, a new luxury retreat nestled in the lush hills overlooking Apia Harbour and Mt Vaea in Samoa, has officially opened, offering guests a high-end experience focused on privacy, comfort and understated luxury.

The retreat has been sensitively designed to blend with its natural surroundings, supporting Samoa’s growing appeal within the premium travel market while delivering an authentic, locally rooted guest experience.

The development will comprise seven villas in total, with three signature villas now open for guests. The final Moana Villa, a two-storey, three-bedroom residence, is expected to launch within the next one to two months.

Moanalei Villas is also home to signature restaurant TASI, developed in collaboration with internationally acclaimed chef Monica Galetti, who was born in Samoa, and sommelier David Galetti. The menu showcases Pacific cuisine with a focus on freshness, authenticity and contemporary flair.

Managing Director and Co-Owner Caitlin Lei Sam, who developed the project alongside her husband and co-owner Ganey Lei Sam, described the retreat as a deeply personal venture inspired by family and a passion for showcasing Samoa.

“The name comes from my daughters, along with our surname Lei Sam, so Moanalei felt like a natural fit,” she said. “We thought, wouldn’t it be amazing to create something like this for Samoa… the concept of being up on a hill with total luxury, everything included.”

Purchased eight years ago, the site has been transformed into a boutique luxury destination inspired by international travel experiences, including hillside villa stays in Thailand.

Each villa features two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, private infinity pools of approximately 14 metres, and seamless indoor-outdoor living. Additional premium touches include smart washlet toilets, while future development plans include a spa and gym.

Complimentary private airport transfers are included, plus a private car and driver is available between 8am and 8pm for guests seeking to explore the island. The retreat

currently employs 26 staff, with a strong emphasis on supporting local employment and integrating Samoan products and experiences into its offerings.

Lei Sam said Moanalei Villas is designed not only for international travellers but also for local guests seeking a unique experience.

“We want people to have that authentic Samoan experience, while also enjoying those extra touches of luxury. We’re filling a gap for Samoan tourism and helping make it even more attractive,” she added.
