Our client, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), is commemorating the 10th anniversary of Art of Black Miami (AOBM), a ground-breaking program that began in the heritage neighbourhoods of Little Haiti, Little Havana, Coconut Grove, and Historic Overtown. Now a countywide initiative, AOBM highlights Greater Miami’s dynamic art scene and its deep-rooted connections to the Black diaspora.

“What started as a seasonal event has evolved into a year-round platform that celebrates our heritage, history, neighbourhoods, and, most importantly, our people,” said David Whitaker, President and CEO of GMCVB. “This program also plays a key role in fostering equity in the arts.”

Over the past decade, AOBM has grown into a year-round force, shining a spotlight on Greater Miami’s Black artists and reinforcing the region’s status as a hub for innovative artistic expression. Acclaimed artists like Sanford Biggers, Basil Watson, Hank Willis Thomas, and Deborah Roberts have contributed to the program, helping to draw global attention to the destination’s rich arts and cultural landscape.

AOBM is now integral to the GMCVB’s efforts to boost tourism and economic growth. By connecting the local art scene with small businesses, the program enhances visibility and drives economic activity throughout the year. AOBM events not only engage local residents but also attract visitors, supporting growth across Greater Miami’s diverse communities.

“Our programming highlights the exceptional talent within our community while offering a platform for Black and Afro-Latino artists to express their unique perspectives on Greater Miami and Miami Beach through their lived experiences,” said Connie Kinnard, Senior Vice President of Multicultural Tourism and Development at GMCVB. “By partnering with local businesses and educating them about the cultural economy, we’re elevating the importance of our neighborhoods and driving year-round tourism. This strengthens Miami-Dade’s reputation as a vibrant cultural destination that thrives beyond peak seasons.”

The 2024-2025 AOBM season kicked off on 18 November with an exciting line-up, including an exhibition by Deborah Roberts, whose work has been featured in prestigious venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and The Studio Museum in Harlem. This season promises to further engage audiences with thought-provoking art and compelling narratives, highlighting both established and emerging artists.

In 2021, the GMCVB expanded AOBM’s reach with the launch of the AOBM Podcast Series. Now in its fourth season, the podcast is available on all major streaming platforms and offers local artists a space to discuss how Greater Miami and Miami Beach’s cultural vibrancy influences their work.
